ARI Values EXERCISE

Instructons

Identify core Values:

Over the course of a few days or weeks, narrow the list of values (located at the bottom of the page) down to three. Make sure not to get stuck on words that feel like they "should" be included and focus on those that really resonate with what you believe to be most important for you. Be aware of the essence of the words—are they more representative of certain feelings you would like to experience or of ways of being you would like to strive toward? Also remember that some of these words have multiple definitions. For example, the second meaning of Integrity might resonate more directly than the first.

Also, there are some words that might be better placed as a subcategory of others: Honesty and Intention might be covered by Integrity. Family might be included in Connection. Balance could be covered by Equanimity.

For Example:

One’s overarching value theme might be to create a sense of Peace of Mind, Freedom and Love in life. However, those words might be too broad or may not fully represent ways of being on that path. In order to achieve those states, one may have to operate with Integrity and Equanimity while creating deep personal Connections.

Integrity:  (Creates Freedom, Peace of Mind)

  1. The quality of being honest and having strong moral principles

  2. The state of being whole and undivided

Equanimity (Emotional Intelligence/Adaptability, Expansive Self-Awareness)

  1. The steady conscious realization of reality's transience, the ground for wisdom and freedom and the protector of compassion and love

  2. Mental calmness, composure, and evenness of temper, especially in difficult situations, stress

Connection: (Love, Being Known)

  1. A bond that holds people together

COnstruct your Personal Philosophy:

A personal philosophy is comprised of words or a phrase that expresses your basic beliefs and values. This philosophy isn’t a platitude or slogan; rather, it’s a compass, guiding actions, thoughts, and decisions. You can use your core value words as a place to start.

Example:

To show up fully, authentically and openly in pursuit of my best self (and to invite others to do the same).

The shorter version:

Wake Up, Show Up and Open Up.

Wake Up = Be authentic with EQUANIMITY

Show Up = Be fully present with INTEGRITY

Open Up = Be willing to be vulnerable and not fear CONNECTION
